CHEMOTHERAPY CLINIC

Chemotherapy is an important part of the overall treatment plan for many cancers. It may sometimes be used before, alongside, or after other treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy. Chemotherapy may be used in your treatment plan to:

  • Help shrink the tumour before treatment with radiation or surgery
  • Make radiation therapy even more effective
  • Target cancer cells that may have spread
  • Help ease symptoms during the advanced stages
  • Effectively handle recurrence or support slower progression

Learning that you’ll be starting chemotherapy can be overwhelming.  At Matclinic Oncology Centre, we offer chemotherapy in a caring environment with a dedicated medical team that is under the supervision of your oncologist to ensure your comfort and safety.

What happens during a chemotherapy session?

Intravenous chemotherapy is administered through a needle in a vein (IV), often accompanied by other medications that help to ease the side effects of the drugs. This will be done in a cosy, welcoming space where you can relax peacefully while our caring medical team attentively looks after you. Snacks, drinks, and a TV will be provided for your comfort.

How can you prepare for chemotherapy?

Being well-prepared can really make treatments feel much easier and more manageable. Here are a few helpful steps:

  • It’s a good idea to eat something light before your session
  • Pack a book, magazine, or simply watch TV  to help pass the time
  • A light sweater or wrap is helpful, as the clinic can feel cool during IV treatments
  • Make sure to stay well-hydrated both the day before and the day after your treatment
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Make sure to arrange your transport home, especially if it’s your first session

Side effects can vary from person to person. These can include fatigue, nausea, changes in appetite, or low immunity. It’s important to remember that not everyone experiences severe side effects. Many patients find that they can return to their daily activities with just a few adjustments.
